Volunteer: Grounds Hero Series: Tidy Trails Edition

This is Ground Zero for Grounds Heroes! A pre-cursor to our Adopt-a-Trail program, this is an opportunity to get some trail clearing experience while helping out your friendly neighborhood TN State Park!

Our Discovery Loop is 4.5 miles of beautiful woodlands and wetlands, broken up into 6, color-coded sections that make planning trail maintenance much simpler. Our 2-mile Initiation Loop, created for us by the Trail Trippers, is a more difficult-to-hike trail that even has some reforestation opportunities.

Come out and help T.O. Fuller Rangers and Maintenance clear our trails of fallen limbs and trees, cut back encroaching foliage, and pick up any litter that may have accrued. We will usually target 2 sections of the Discovery Loop or half of the Initiation Loop in a given day. We will provide water, but please bring a refillable water bottle.

(p.s. Our next dates are September 14th and September 15th.)

Volunteer: Tax Volunteers (January-April 2026)

You have what it takes to be a VITA volunteer in Kingsport or Blountville!

The Kingsport VITA program is operating two sites this year.  Our first site is in the V.O. Dobbins Community Center located at 285 Louis Street in Kingsport.  We operate this site as a drop-off site.  We do intake by appointment on Mondays from 4:00PM to 7PM.  On Tuesdays from 9:00AM to around 3:00PM we prepare the income tax returns from the batch of drop-offs on Monday (we provide lunch on-site for the tax preparers).  Then on Thursday evening from 4:00PM to 7PM we review the completed tax returns with the clients.  At this site the greatest need is tax preparers, although if your people could help with the intake interviews, this could allow our tax preparers to work on tax returns during the intake sessions.

The second site is in the Sullivan County Public Library - Blountville Branch (1655 Blountville Boulevard in Blountville, TN).  This is also a drop-off site format.  This location offers flexible options for volunteers to help perform tax returns.

Also, if doing taxes is not your "thing", we have a need for intake specialists at both locations. This includes signing people in, making copies of key information, and providing general directions. (No tax knowledge necessary).

World Relief's mission is to boldly engage the world's greatest crises in partnership with the local church and community. Here in Memphis, World Relief serves refugee families who are rebuilding their lives in the 901.

World Relief Memphis is seeking volunteers to interpret English and Spanish, Arabic, Dari, or Swahili. Interpretation is used during meetings between staff and clients; in large group settings (Ex: client workshops and cultural orientations); and other scenarios like helping clients open bank accounts, work on resumes, fill out job applications, and learn digital literacy.

The time commitment varies depending on the scenario. Once onboarded, you would be added to a list of people who have offered interpretation. Staff will contact you when there is a need for an interpreter.

Benefits to the Volunteer:

Satisfaction of making a significant impact in the lives of immigrants. Opportunity to meet a diverse group of people and work as part of a dedicated team. Developing valuable skills that are transferable to many professional and personal situations.

Volunteer Onboarding is required before volunteering:

The volunteer onboarding steps are required before you can begin as a volunteer. These onboarding steps help you get to know World Relief, help us get to know you, and help protect you and our clients from harm.  Check your email for a message from your Volunteer Coordinator with next steps. Onboarding includes a short application, online workshop, background check, reference check, and live orientation. You can jumpstart your onboarding by filling out the short term/long term volunteer application in the World Relief Portal.

Volunteer: Be A Youth Mentor

World Relief is looking for male and female mentors. Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred but not required.

The Youth Mentoring Program at World Relief Memphis is designed to pair young refugee participants with mentors from the community who are dedicated to helping them identify and achieve their short-term and long-term goals.

Mentors walk alongside refugee and immigrant youth ages 15-24 with the goal of developing mutually transformative relationships. The youth set their life, career, or educational goals and mentors meet regularly with the mentees to provide support, find resources and build relationship.

This program is focused on promoting positive civic and social engagement.

Men are especially needed at this time, but women may apply as well, with the understanding that there may be a waiting period before being matched with a mentee.

Time Commitment

Mentors commit to meeting together every other week for 6-12 months. High school aged mentees and their mentors meet every other Wednesday night in a staff-led group setting. Young adult mentees and their mentors meet 4 hours per month on their own time and location to discuss progress with goals.
