| Volunteer: Friendly Neighbor ProgramDo you enjoy spending time with others? Elderly or disabled clients can greatly benefit from a volunteer visiting in the capacity of a friendly neighbor providing socialization and much needed contact to the outside world, combating isolation and loneliness. Often those needs are not met by traditional programs, so volunteers can step in and close this crucial gap in services. Depending on the client's needs, volunteers in this role will just spend time with the client talking, reading or assist with getting the mail and reading it to the client or helping them understand the contents. Some clients may need a hand with simple household tasks such as switching a light bulb or vacuuming. Volunteers and clients could also partake in doing simple art projects together, if desired. Volunteers will be paired with a client in their area and volunteer and client will agree on the specifics of the volunteer's role prior to any visits. Volunteers should be willing to commit to a minimum of one visit per month for this opportunity. Please sign up if you are interested and we will be in touch to discuss next steps. Since this is a pilot opportunity the matching process might take a little longer. We'd love for you to provide feedback throughout the process so we can make improvements as we launch this opportunity on a bigger scale. I'll leave you with a quote from our first volunteer in this pilot: "The Friendly neighbor program has benefited and rewarded me in so many ways. My client was blind and lonely, little or no interaction with people on a regular basis. My stopping by just once a week to read his mail and chat lifted his spirits greatly. He now can see as he has had both cataracts removed, but I am still checking on him. I think the only thing one needs to realize is that many live in poor circumstances but that doesn’t mean they aren’t proud of what they have. And most of all everyone needs and deserves respect and human kindness."

| Volunteer: Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA)Recruiting potential volunteer advocates to assist the abused and neglected children in Anderson and Blount counties.CASA of the Tennessee Heartland is a Non-Profit organization that recruits, trains and supervises volunteers to advocate on behalf of abused and neglected children who have been removed from their homes and placed into foster care. A CASA volunteer is trained on the court and child welfare systems, child abuse and neglect, state and federal laws, and the roles and responsibilities of a CASA volunteer. One volunteer is paired with one child or one case (if there are multiple children in the family) and remains their advocate from the time they enter into foster care until they are placed in a safe and permanent home. You must be 21 or over, pass background checks, participate in a 33-hour pre-service training course and agree to stay with a case until it is closed (a year and a half on average). | Volunteer: Gather Housing Supplies for Arriving RefugeesBridge Refugee Services is expecting to welcome a record number of refugees to Knoxville this year, and we cannot do this without community support. We are always looking to restock our supply of donations of household goods and furniture to provide material support for our refugee families arriving all year long. I would like to invite both individuals and groups to assist us through in-kind donation drives for household goods to help us in new home set-ups for our newest neighbors. Pillows, bedding, fresh towels and washcloths, toiletries, laundry detergent, kitchen trash cans, dishes and cookware, cleaning supplies, school supplies--all are needed! We are launching a brand-new initiative this year to create sustainability and efficiency in our donations process, and charitable groups can help us by donating various housing kits. Your group can look through our brand new BRS Housing Kit Guide and pick a housing kit that speaks to your group, and then put together as many kits as you are able to. We do accept some items as gently used, like dishes, flatware, pots, and pans; but other items like bedding, towels, toiletries, etc. would need to be new. If you cannot commit to a whole kit, you can still donate any item(s) from this guide to support welcoming refugees to the Knoxville area! Even if you wanted to just collect new pillows or umbrellas (or school supplies, which are not in the Housing Kit Guide), this would be a huge help! Large groups collecting donations for us really help us meet the material needs of our refugee families. If this is something you or your group would like to do, I can point you in the right direction as far as current needs go. | Volunteer: Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA)CASA is looking for volunteers able to commit to at least one year of service as Court Appointed Special Advocates. The 30 hour training and 3 hours of court observation prepare future CASAs for their role as advocates for children in abuse and neglect cases in Juvenile Court. CASA volunteers are everyday citizens that judges appoint to advocate for the safety and well-being of children who have been removed from their homes due to parental abuse and neglect. They stand up for these children and change their lives. CASA volunteers listen first. Then they act. Volunteers get to know the child and talk with everyone in that child’s life—parents and relatives, foster parents, teachers, medical professionals, attorneys, social workers and others. They use the information they gather to inform judges and others of what the child needs and what will be the best permanent home for them. Being a CASA volunteer does not require any special education or background, just a heart for children and a willingness to speak out and represent their best interests. Casa of the Tennessee Heartland Serves Anderson and Blount Counties. You must be 21 or over, pass background checks, participate in a 33-hour pre-service training course and agree to stay with a case until it is closed (a year and a half on average). | Volunteer: Share Knowledge, Connections, and Resources with Students on the Social Platform for Social MobilityOnly 3% of high-performing, under-resourced students end up in a great first career experience. On our social platform, professionals like you can help change that. Here's how: 1. Sign up via your computer at my.backrs.com or by downloading the Backrs mobile app from the Apple App or Google Play Stores. 2. Tell us a little about your background and experiences by completing your profile. This takes 5 mins. (Up to 15 if you'd like to give students more details about your hobbies and interests.) 3. We add you to identity-based, regional, university, and career-path Affinity Networks where you can connect with students you're well-positioned to support. 4. In Networks, you can answer students' questions, post resources or job/internship opportunities, and share insights into your college and career journey by responding to Backstage Pass posts. Though each of these actions takes a few minutes, they all have meaningful impacts on young people. 5. If you'd like to play a more involved role in a student's journey, you can join their panel of backrs. This enables you to view their goals, post on their personal feed, schedule Zoom check-ins, and even contribute to their Flourish Fund. It's a great choice for those looking to offer low-lift, relationship-driven support. Best way to see how convenient and rewarding being a backr really is? Give it a try, commitment-free: Or get the Backrs mobile app: Apple App Store or Google Play Store Our Impact Model Research shows that cross-class relationships are the biggest predictors of social mobility. And financial margin increases the odds of college persistence four-fold. We partner with schools and youth organizations to recruit committed high school and college students into our community. Then, by removing the barriers the keep well-resourced adults from connecting with under-resourced young people, our technology builds bridges across socioeconomic strata, enabling people like you to empower students like Diego R. Diego R. joined Backrs so he could pursue his dream of becoming a biomedical engineer. Thanks to his talent, hard work, and the support he's received from his backrs, he's well on his way to making that dream a reality. As he explained: "My brother was born with Chronic Kidney Disease. He’s the man who gives me the strength to pursue Biomedical Engineering and become an accomplished technician. I strive to make the lives of those who suffer like him better. I want to be the change he needs to be healthy." All of the students in our community are driven to build a better world; when they're given the resources to do so, everyone around them benefits. Watch this video to learn more about the difference Backrs makes for students: Kaothara's ExperienceThe Backrs Experience Being a great backr isn’t about grand gestures or having all the answers. It’s about the small things: sharing a word of encouragement. Passing along a helpful resource. Making an introduction. These actions make a big difference--take it from some of our current backrs: "As a backr, I love the opportunity to support and mentor my three proteges as they grow and develop. I feel grateful to be able to guide and shape their future in a positive way. Through Backrs, I have been able to watch them grow into confident and capable individuals, and it has given me a sense of purpose and fulfillment that I can't put into words. It's made a tremendous difference in my life to see them achieve their goals and know that I played a role in helping them get there." - Ahmed Dawood, Marketer at Apple "Backrs gives me an opportunity to utilize my expertise to provide mentoring and support to students. Even though my students are a couple time zones away, I have the flexibility to connect with them on my time and have been dedicated to checking my app weekly at minimum to engage in conversations and answer questions. Its exciting to celebrate their wins and talk about future plans. Mentoring was very impactful in my life so it gives me joy to give back in this way." - Lori Hunt, College Provost Join the Movement for Social Mobility Sign up for backrs today!

| Volunteer: Lawn Care Assistance for RefugeesOne of our roles as Knoxville's only refugee resettlement agency is to find affordable housing for our arriving refugee families. This task comes with unique challenges. One of these unique challenges is the rental agreements and city ordinances that require our refugee families to take care of the yard of their rental property. We receive a lot of refugee families--many of whom are single mother with young children--who:Have no cultural knowledge of how to use a lawn mower or do yard work, Do not have the necessary equipment to do yard work, and Have young children and cannot leave these children alone to get out in the yard for an hour or so to do the yard work. There are opportunities in the Spring, Summer, and early Fall months for volunteers to help us meet the yard work needs of our refugee families and single mothers. This is also a great opportunity for groups that can serve refugee families through cutting grass, pulling weeds, raking leaves, and general yard clean-up. Special Requirement: The volunteer would need to be able to provide their own lawn equipment and get it to and from the property, since the families do not own any equipment. If this is an opportunity you or a group you are associated with are interested in helping us with, please reach out to me at pgreen@bridgerefugees.org! | Volunteer: Docents Needed at Memphis Brooks Museum of ArtDo you love art? Do you enjoy interacting with people and sharing information? Are you looking for a regular volunteer commitment with monthly educational and enrichment opportunities? Do you want to meet others in Memphis who also love learning and talking about art?
The Brooks' Docent Program, which has been serving school-aged children for 60 years, is looking for Docent Candidates for the Class of 2025. This class of docents will begin training in September 2024.
The Docent Program consists of a training period and then a service period as a Docent. Though new docent training only lasts four months, docents receive continuous training through monthly meetings led by educators or curators. After completing their initial training, docents select one day of the week to be available for giving tours to school or adult groups. We ask that docents commit to two years of service within the program though many stay and continue to be active for years to come.
The Docent Program is offering two sections of training this fall, though both will begin in September and end by mid-December. These two sections will specialize in different areas, either School Tour Docents or Specialty Group Docents. Training sessions will be offered either on weekends/evenings (Specialty Group Docents) or during the weekday (School Tour Docent).
