Volunteer: Drive cancer patients to life-saving treatment

What's often standing between people with cancer and life-saving treatment is a ride to get there.

Volunteers with Road To Recovery use their personal vehicle to drive cancer patients with limited or no transportation to treatments.

Rides are weekdays. We encourage drivers provide 2 rides per month. Choose the rides that work with your schedule. We think you'll find it a flexible and rewarding volunteer experience while helping your community.

Volunteer drivers are ages 18-84 and

a safe driving record a current license, reliable vehicle, and vehicle insurance are comfortable using technology

Interested volunteers complete short online training and a background check. Volunteers review available rides via an online scheduling tool.

We would love your help! Connect here &/or check out cancer.org/drive for FAQs and to get started on training. We would love to connect to answer questions and get you started.

Volunteer: Trail Monitor

Purpose: The purpose of the opportunity is to create a monitoring system for our trails that can provide quick repairs and improve safety on the trail. It allows volunteers to provide important information to park rangers of trail issues, or safety risk on our trail that needs immediate attention.

When: You can do this at your own leisure. No set time or trail for this.

Where:  All trails

What to do: Hiking one or multiple trails and either reporting issues or fixing issues yourself. Examples of issues that you can fix are clearing debris of trail such as lose rocks, tree limbs or other items that may impede your hike and removing trash/litter from trail. Examples of issues that you would report would be, down trees over the trail, hazardous trees, bridges broken/not operating correctly, trail markers missing, and any hazards you think should be reported to a Ranger. (Trash pick up is better during the spring on trails next to lake. When spring rains bring the lake back up. Down trees are all year but more severe during winter and early spring)

After your hike please report your hours back on here this gives you credit and allows you another confirmation that the hours were completed if you need volunteer hours. It also allows state park to keep track of volunteer hours at our park and throughout the state. After you report your hours please email Justin.Vaughn@tn.gov about details of your hike. Be as detailed as you possible can about the issues you encountered, such as what trail you were on,  approximate location, size of trees, and how severe you think the issues is. You can even send photos of issues to this email if you want. All this informations makes park staff better prepared for the trail issues which saves time, money and makes for quicker fixes.

Experience: Basic hiking experience and trail knowledge

Questions: Contact Park Ranger Justin Vaughn

Volunteer: Adopt-a-Plot & Help Our Gardens Grow!

We have a multitude of container and traditional gardens leading up to and surrounding the Miller Farmstead. Over time, we'd like to convert each of these plots into arrangements of native and traditionally-relevant perennial plants that will provide eco-services to local wildlife and be beautiful to look at for our visitors.

We are currently recruiting regular service volunteers to adopt small garden plots to maintain on a regular basis. Maintenance can be as little as tackling weeds in an existing plot for half an hour twice a month during the growing season, or as much as designing appropriate plantings and working with staff to renew a bed from start to finish.

This is an opportunity where experienced gardeners can work relatively independently, but we are happy to provide training and direction to inexperienced gardeners where needed. Bring your own tools and gloves, or use ours.

If you'd like a smaller project to manage that will make a big difference and be seen and enjoyed by millions of visitors, we welcome your help.

Volunteer: The Gateway, Recovery Community Center

The Gateway is a recovery community center, based off a national evidence-based model to provide additional supports and on-going recovery to those transitioning from addiction treatment back into the community or who are seeking recovery, but need someone to walk beside them as they navigate a path free from substance misuse. At The Gateway, we provide a variety of services including harm reduction, recovery coaching, treatment and sober living referrals, daily recovery meetings, music therapy, and more.

The Gateway is in need of volunteers for a variety of services. Because of the nature of this work, we do require volunteers to submit an application and agree to a background check. Volunteer: Monday and/or Tuesday Afternoon Visitor Center Volunteer

Chattanooga Audubon Society's Visitor Center serves as a hub for education, advocacy, and community engagement. Volunteers find themselves immersed in a vibrant atmosphere, surrounded by passionate individuals who share a love for nature and conservation.

As a Visitor Center Greeter, your role is vital in creating an unforgettable experience for every guest. You'll be their go-to guide, sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm for the trails that wind through the picturesque landscapes. Offering personalized recommendations, you'll help visitors choose the perfect trail to embark upon. But that's not all! As you greet and engage with guests, you'll have the chance to delve into the fascinating history of Audubon Acres. From tales of the legendary Robert Sparks Walker Cabin to the captivating stories of the land's indigenous people, you'll weave a narrative that transports visitors back in time and ignites their curiosity.

So, if you're ready to be a part of something extraordinary, to share the beauty of nature and the allure of history, become a Visitor Center Greeter at the Chattanooga Audubon Society. The impact of volunteers is felt far beyond the center itself. By promoting environmental stewardship and fostering a deep connection with nature, volunteers become catalysts for change in the community. Their enthusiasm, knowledge, and dedication leave visitors in awe and inspire others to embrace sustainable living and protect the natural wonders that surround us.

*Visitor’s Center volunteers also handle tasks such as answering the phone, running the cash register, and providing guests with information about the land and trails.

Shifts are 9:00am-1:00pm or 1:00pm-5:00pm

Due to the nature of this role, we ask that you commit to one 4-hour shift per week for a minimum of 3 months. Weekend Volunteers are asked to commit to 2 Saturdays per month. This frees up our staff to work on programming, administrative work, and other tasks that require them to be away from the visitor’s center.
To apply, please contact Jessica Whitehorn at jwhitehorn@chattaudubon.org.

All those interested in Volunteering will go through at least 5 days of training. We ask that at least 2 of those training days be on a week day if possible.

By joining Colby’s Army as an Outreach Partner, you’ll be meeting with us on Tuesday mornings to combine forces before going out into the community to provide services to individuals experiencing homelessness and resource scarcity. Ideally, you'd be able to provide a vehicle and we’ll give you a list of locations to check up on our friends - with whom you can take requests and discuss current needs, and we’ll work together to find solutions! If you're unable to drive your own car but still want to get involved, please let us know and we'll make it work.

Volunteer: Lesson Assistant or Participant Support

These volunteers work directly with our lesson participants in mounted and unmounted activities. Some lessons are in our garden or other areas of our farm, and some involve horses. Working with our participants can be the most rewarding thing you will do here at our learning center! Lesson Assistants will be working alongside the PATH-certified instructor to take care of random needs like moving a cone out of the way, or running to the barn to grab fly spray. As Participant Support you’d be walking alongside our horse and rider to sure they’re staying balanced or providing support during unmounted activities.

Volunteers will need to complete horse handling training, leader and sidewalker training, or our non-equine general lesson assistant training. Our 50-minute lesson times are set according to the participants’ schedules and may be adjusted if needed due to weather.

To schedule time for training, please reach out with your availability and we’ll make it happen!

Volunteer: Meals on Wheels in Hampton needs you!

Can you donate an hour or two once a month to make a difference in your community? Do you enjoy knowing you have made a difference in someone’s life?

Then Meals on Wheels needs you! We depend on individuals like you to deliver a hot, nutrition meal to homebound seniors. Your smile and that meal may be the highlight of their day.

You can volunteer as little as once a month or you can volunteer once a week or more. Routes typically take an hour to an hour and a half. The average route has around 15-20 stops. Meals are delivered daily Monday through Friday (except for holidays) and meals can be picked between 9am-11am.

Offering up a small portion of your time can make a great impact on the people you will deliver to. They will appreciate your kindness and willingness to make sure they receive a meal. It may be the only hot, nutritious meal they have that day. You are also providing a welfare check as you may be the only person they see that day.

Volunteer: Wildlife Animal Care Volunteers

At Opie Acres the work is on going 365 days a year. We have from 75-200 animals in care at all time. The work is physical and dirty, at times, but it is very rewarding. Volunteers are required a minimum of 4 hours per week to stay current in specific care duties. As a volunteer you will learn species specific diets, cage care, infant care, elderly care and basic first aid. As you learn, you can expand your duties and possibly qualify as an advanced team member, caring for our more unusual and difficult patients and resident. You could join our medical Team and learn how to give life saving care, special feeding, and care taking duties, medicine administration, and wound care. We work outdoors and indoors, which requires us to be outside in inclement weather. If you are unable to perform the more physical task, we have plenty of duties in our food processing and preparation, and also in our infant care. Please consider joining us so that we can continue our care for these forgotten animals.

Volunteer: Rock Island State Park Invasive Plant Strike Team

Reducing the incidence of invasive plants in wild places allows time and space for the flourishing of a diverse biotic community. The exclusion of rare, endemic, or specialist species in an ecologically globalized world is common.

However, uncommon and extremely valuable are the ecological stewards who can help alleviate this pressure and provide time for ecological adaptation. Do you live in a "world of wounds" so eloquently described by the father of Conservation Biology, Aldo Leopold? Do you want to help keep all the parts on the landscape and be the intelligent tinkerer, the steward, that wild places demand of us?

Join the Rock Island State Park team in the establishment of our first ever ongoing volunteer based Invasive Species Strike Team. Your actions will have a direct impact on the success of endemic, rare, and threatened species in the park. Your volunteerism matters! Your actions can have an impact for generations!

The strike team will use hand tools, mechanical tools, and herbicide to target and remove the identified invasive plants in Rock Island State Park. Previous experience is not required; training and guidance will be given.

The strike team is designed with you in mind and built around the team's interest and schedule. Learn practical skills for wildlife habitat improvement, learn plant identification, apply ecological principles in real time with satisfying feedback. The strike team can be a group you are already a part of. Are you a wildlife student with a group of classmates looking for a curriculum vitae boost? Do you have a group of friends who love wild places and want to give back?

If this sounds like you and you want to learn more, click respond and leave a message with your contact information. Thanks for your volunteerism!

Volunteer: Working Dogs For Vets Dog Volunteer Program

  Working Dogs For Vets
Dog Volunteer Program   The Working Dogs For Vets Dog Volunteer program is in need of volunteers to help train and care for service dogs in training at HQ to help them continue to learn until they complete on-campus Service Dog training with their veteran. We need volunteers in order to help the In-House dogs till they are matched and paired with veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, military sexual trauma and/or other disabilities. Kenneth Knabenshue, Working Dogs For Vets Founder and Wife Brenda Moody Knabenshue Co-Founders collectively program managers, overseeing the volunteers, Kenneth with experience as a K9 trainer, understands what animals need in order to be successful as Service Dogs. Brenda helps with communications.    Our primary goal is to save veterans and dogs alike. When it comes to adopting dogs from shelters, or taking dogs in from rescue groups they need training in order to be matched.  We can’t accept all dogs, but we do what we can. We are limited to availability of trainers. Dogs that are adopted by WDFV are trained in one of our 2 prison dog programs and then come to our in house program and are matched to l fit veterans’ needs, the process takes time so we are in need of volunteers to help! This provides a longer-term opportunity Volunteers must be able to supervise dogs throughout the day, keeping up with manners and basic skills, and in depth tasks they have learned.  Also socialization opportunities outside of the campus. Requirements to be a Dog Volunteer include: Be at least 18 years old *Minors are accepted with a parent as a co-applicant. Live within a drivable distance of National Headquarters in Lawrenceburg, TN. Have regular access to a vehicle Attend human-only classes with K9s trainers to ensure that you are knowledgeable in dog care and helping dogs to ensure they are trained in a manner consistent with Working Dogs For Vets programs Attend obedience classes with WDFV trainers Maintain a safe environment for respective dogs being trained Provide appropriate socialization opportunities (i.e. public places) Agree to Working Dogs For Vets Policies  We offer a wide range of ways to get involved, each with varying requirements, responsibilities and commitment levels, and we provide all of our volunteers with guidance and training as needed.  To ensure the safety of the organization’s people and property, and the animals in our care, we conduct a background check of our volunteers’ criminal history. Additional background check components will be included based on the scope of the volunteer work. The organization will consider volunteer applicants with a criminal record on a case-by-case basis. Typically, crimes against people or animals, or crimes of a more recent nature, may be cause for us to decline a volunteer application. Only have a few days to help out? Volunteer are on-call basis for a variety of reasons. Outreach & Engagement The entire experience is fulfilling and underscores the point that we are all stronger when we work together for the animals and veterans who need our help the most. When you volunteer to help veterans and dogs, you help yourself How volunteering for animal shelters, rescues and nonprofits improves your mental and physical health If you have a full-time job and also attempt to be a good friend, partner, parent and pet owner, or foster you might assume that adding volunteering to the mix would make you feel more stressed.  Yet numerous studies show the opposite: A 2015 study in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that people who both worked and volunteered actually had better mental health and fewer feelings of work-life conflict. A 2013 study from researchers at Carnegie Mellon University found that adults over age 50 who volunteered regularly were less likely to develop high blood pressure than non-volunteers. Most surprising of all, a 2012 study published in Psychological Science found that “spending time on others increases one’s sense of time affluence … driven by a boosted sense of self-efficacy.”  In other words, giving your time in service of others can make you feel as if you have more time, even if your schedule is busier. The good news is that for animal lovers, opportunities abound:  Working Dogs For Vets is almost always looking for people to help with animal care, administrative tasks, cleaning and laundry, and many shelters offer guidance on making inexpensive toys for residents or gathering pet care supplies like old towels and blankets from friends and neighbors. Working Dogs For Vets is recruiting volunteers to join our team.   We are accepting applications for Volunteers! Over the past year, we have been fortunate to have Working Dogs For Vets supporters volunteer their time to help our veterans and service dogs. There are many ongoing and special on and off-site work projects at Working dogs for vets, and across the United States, that we simply don’t have enough staff to accomplish, so we have come to rely on the kindness of volunteers to assist us in keeping up. Your efforts will benefit both the veterans and the many dogs rescued from shelters in an important way! Every task, no matter how big or small, matters in the lives of each of our Veteran/dog teams. You will undoubtedly have the time of your life as you work side by side with another Veteran/dog enthusiast on a group project. Whether you are walking dogs, training, or helping in another way you are sure to create memories that you will never forget!  Apply to volunteer After completing this form please contact us by email: Support@WorkingDogsForVets.Org
