Volunteer: Foster Parents/Home for Rescued Dogs

Streetdog Foundation does not have a facility, so we depend on volunteers to provide loving foster homes for our dogs while they wait to find the perfect family.  Streetdog provides all of the food, toys, medical care and other needed items. Volunteers provide the love!  We are limited only by the number of fosters available for the dogs we rescue.  Help us save more lives!

There are several options for fostering so that you can choose what best fits your lifestyle. Our Foster and Integration teams are ready to help you find the best fit and to help introduce a foster to any other pets in your household.

Day Trips: Our dogs in boarding long for companionship, so why not take them to a nearby park for a walk, to a dog-friendly patio for some lunch, or  to meet up with some furry friends?

Weekend/Short Term Foster: When long term fosters go on vacations, or if a dog in boarding just needs a break, weekend fostering lets you spend time with a pup without the long term commitment.

Long Term Foster: Fosters open their homes for dogs until they find the perfect family. This can be several weeks to several months.

If you are interested in fostering for any length of time, please fill out the application linked below.

Volunteer: Lesson Assistant or Participant Support

These volunteers work directly with our lesson participants in mounted and unmounted activities. Some lessons are in our garden or other areas of our farm, and some involve horses. Working with our participants can be the most rewarding thing you will do here at our learning center! Lesson Assistants will be working alongside the PATH-certified instructor to take care of random needs like moving a cone out of the way, or running to the barn to grab fly spray. As Participant Support you’d be walking alongside our horse and rider to sure they’re staying balanced or providing support during unmounted activities.

Volunteers will need to complete horse handling training, leader and sidewalker training, or our non-equine general lesson assistant training. Our 50-minute lesson times are set according to the participants’ schedules and may be adjusted if needed due to weather.

To schedule time for training, please reach out with your availability and we’ll make it happen!

Volunteer: Meals on Wheels in Hampton needs you!

Can you donate an hour or two once a month to make a difference in your community? Do you enjoy knowing you have made a difference in someone’s life?

Then Meals on Wheels needs you! We depend on individuals like you to deliver a hot, nutrition meal to homebound seniors. Your smile and that meal may be the highlight of their day.

You can volunteer as little as once a month or you can volunteer once a week or more. Routes typically take an hour to an hour and a half. The average route has around 15-20 stops. Meals are delivered daily Monday through Friday (except for holidays) and meals can be picked between 9am-11am.

Offering up a small portion of your time can make a great impact on the people you will deliver to. They will appreciate your kindness and willingness to make sure they receive a meal. It may be the only hot, nutritious meal they have that day. You are also providing a welfare check as you may be the only person they see that day.

As a Lasagna Love Chef, you pick when you are available, how far you are able to travel, and your Local Leader will match you with a neighbor in need of a meal. Once matched you communicate with the recipient and schedule when to deliver your homemade meal!

Lasagna Love is a global nonprofit and grassroots movement that aims to positively impact communities by connecting neighbors with neighbors through homemade meal delivery. We also seek to eliminate stigmas associated with asking for help when it is needed most.

Volunteer: Wildlife Animal Care Volunteers

At Opie Acres the work is on going 365 days a year. We have from 75-200 animals in care at all time. The work is physical and dirty, at times, but it is very rewarding. Volunteers are required a minimum of 4 hours per week to stay current in specific care duties. As a volunteer you will learn species specific diets, cage care, infant care, elderly care and basic first aid. As you learn, you can expand your duties and possibly qualify as an advanced team member, caring for our more unusual and difficult patients and resident. You could join our medical Team and learn how to give life saving care, special feeding, and care taking duties, medicine administration, and wound care. We work outdoors and indoors, which requires us to be outside in inclement weather. If you are unable to perform the more physical task, we have plenty of duties in our food processing and preparation, and also in our infant care. Please consider joining us so that we can continue our care for these forgotten animals.

Volunteer: Rock Island State Park Invasive Plant Strike Team

Reducing the incidence of invasive plants in wild places allows time and space for the flourishing of a diverse biotic community. The exclusion of rare, endemic, or specialist species in an ecologically globalized world is common.

However, uncommon and extremely valuable are the ecological stewards who can help alleviate this pressure and provide time for ecological adaptation. Do you live in a "world of wounds" so eloquently described by the father of Conservation Biology, Aldo Leopold? Do you want to help keep all the parts on the landscape and be the intelligent tinkerer, the steward, that wild places demand of us?

Join the Rock Island State Park team in the establishment of our first ever ongoing volunteer based Invasive Species Strike Team. Your actions will have a direct impact on the success of endemic, rare, and threatened species in the park. Your volunteerism matters! Your actions can have an impact for generations!

The strike team will use hand tools, mechanical tools, and herbicide to target and remove the identified invasive plants in Rock Island State Park. Previous experience is not required; training and guidance will be given.

The strike team is designed with you in mind and built around the team's interest and schedule. Learn practical skills for wildlife habitat improvement, learn plant identification, apply ecological principles in real time with satisfying feedback. The strike team can be a group you are already a part of. Are you a wildlife student with a group of classmates looking for a curriculum vitae boost? Do you have a group of friends who love wild places and want to give back?

If this sounds like you and you want to learn more, click respond and leave a message with your contact information. Thanks for your volunteerism!

Have regular access to a vehicle Attend human-only classes with K9s trainers to ensure that you are knowledgeable in dog care and helping dogs to ensure they are trained in a manner consistent with Working Dogs For Vets programs Attend obedience classes with WDFV trainers Maintain a safe environment for respective dogs being trained Provide appropriate socialization opportunities (i.e. public places) Agree to Working Dogs For Vets Policies  We offer a wide range of ways to get involved, each with varying requirements, responsibilities and commitment levels, and we provide all of our volunteers with guidance and training as needed.  To ensure the safety of the organization’s people and property, and the animals in our care, we conduct a background check of our volunteers’ criminal history. Additional background check components will be included based on the scope of the volunteer work. The organization will consider volunteer applicants with a criminal record on a case-by-case basis. Typically, crimes against people or animals, or crimes of a more recent nature, may be cause for us to decline a volunteer application. Only have a few days to help out? Volunteer are on-call basis for a variety of reasons. Outreach & Engagement The entire experience is fulfilling and underscores the point that we are all stronger when we work together for the animals and veterans who need our help the most. When you volunteer to help veterans and dogs, you help yourself How volunteering for animal shelters, rescues and nonprofits improves your mental and physical health If you have a full-time job and also attempt to be a good friend, partner, parent and pet owner, or foster you might assume that adding volunteering to the mix would make you feel more stressed.  Yet numerous studies show the opposite: A 2015 study in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that people who both worked and volunteered actually had better mental health and fewer feelings of work-life conflict. A 2013 study from researchers at Carnegie Mellon University found that adults over age 50 who volunteered regularly were less likely to develop high blood pressure than non-volunteers. Most surprising of all, a 2012 study published in Psychological Science found that “spending time on others increases one’s sense of time affluence … driven by a boosted sense of self-efficacy.”  In other words, giving your time in service of others can make you feel as if you have more time, even if your schedule is busier. The good news is that for animal lovers, opportunities abound:  Working Dogs For Vets is almost always looking for people to help with animal care, administrative tasks, cleaning and laundry, and many shelters offer guidance on making inexpensive toys for residents or gathering pet care supplies like old towels and blankets from friends and neighbors. Working Dogs For Vets is recruiting volunteers to join our team.   We are accepting applications for Volunteers! Over the past year, we have been fortunate to have Working Dogs For Vets supporters volunteer their time to help our veterans and service dogs. There are many ongoing and special on and off-site work projects at Working dogs for vets, and across the United States, that we simply don’t have enough staff to accomplish, so we have come to rely on the kindness of volunteers to assist us in keeping up. Your efforts will benefit both the veterans and the many dogs rescued from shelters in an important way! Every task, no matter how big or small, matters in the lives of each of our Veteran/dog teams. You will undoubtedly have the time of your life as you work side by side with another Veteran/dog enthusiast on a group project. Whether you are walking dogs, training, or helping in another way you are sure to create memories that you will never forget!  Apply to volunteer After completing this form please contact us by email: Support@WorkingDogsForVets.Org

We need volunteers in order to help the In-House dogs till they are matched and paired with veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, military sexual trauma and/or other disabilities. Volunteer: Litter Cleanup Crew (Rivers, Trails, & Roadways)

Our State Parks are beautiful and unique places that should be enjoyed by everyone. Unfortunately, trash and litter always seems to make its way into the parks as well and sometimes there just is not enough time in a day to clean it all up. We need your help to keep the park beautiful and in return, you will earn volunteer service hours and a feeling of accomplishment.

This is an ongoing opportunity for community members and those who need volunteer hours to assist with clean-up duties throughout the park in areas with high levels of debris and/or litter. Trash bags and gloves will be provided to you by the park. Sturdy, closed toes shoes are required for this opportunity. All minors must be accompanied by an adult.

Please contact the site supervisor to schedule your visit. Each participant must sign a liability waiver before volunteering to receive credit.

Volunteer: Help a Refugee Achieve Economic Success at G.R.O.W.!

Come help us teach refugees how to sew and how to market that new skill on their path to self-sufficiency!

The three pillars of success for refugees in the United States are learning English, employment, and community engagement.  With our new G.R.O.W. program, we hope to provide our refugees a path to accomplish all three.

G.R.O.W. stands for Growing Refugee Opportunities and Wealth, and it is a community-driven Bridge Refugee Services initiative centered on fostering sustained self-sufficiency through culturally informed vocational training, wellness education, and entrepreneurial opportunities.  Right now, the program is centered around teaching sewing as a marketable skill, ESL, and the entrepreneurial instruction to use this new skill to bring in a steady income.

We are looking for volunteers to help us as floaters/assistants, with transportation, with set-up and tear-down, and with childcare.  No sewing experience, foreign language skills, or experience with working with refugee populations needed!

This opportunity is on the second and fourth Saturday of each month from 9:30am-12:30pm at First Presbyterian Church.

Volunteer Requirements:

Complete Bridge Volunteer Paperwork Attend Bridge Volunteer Orientation (about 1hr via Zoom) Background Check through Sterling Volunteers ($17.50 paid to Sterling Volunteers)

If you have any additional questions, please reach out to Peter Green, our Volunteer & Co-Sponsorship Manager, via email at pgreen@bridgerefugees.org.

Volunteer: Furniture Donation Pick-Up Drivers Needed!

Help us welcome our newest refugee neighbors to Knoxville!  We need volunteers with trucks, trailers, or tow equipment to help us pick up furniture donations from week-to-week!

One of our missions at Bridge Refugee Services is to provide safe, affordable, and furnished housing for our arriving refugee families.  We are largely dependent upon in-kind donations of gently used furniture from the community to set up a new home for our refugee families.  Sadly, we are missing out on a lot of donations because our organization is unable to do furniture pick-ups.

We are looking for hero volunteers with weekday availability and vehicles that can transport couches, loveseats, dressers, dining tables, nightstands, end tables, and other basic types of furniture!

Furniture pick-ups will generally happen on an as-needed basis usually during Bridge office hours, 8:30-5:30 M-F, and furniture will need to be transported to our off-site storage unit on Western Ave.

Volunteer Requirements:

Complete Bridge Volunteer Paperwork Attend Bridge Volunteer Orientation (about 1hr via Zoom) Background Check through Sterling Volunteers ($17.50 per person paid to Sterling Volunteers)

Foreign language skills or experience working with refugee populations not required.

If you have any additional questions, please reach out to Peter Green, our Volunteer & Co-Sponsorship Manager, via email at pgreen@bridgerefugees.org.

Volunteer: Friendly Neighbor Program

Do you enjoy spending time with others?

Elderly or disabled clients can greatly benefit from a volunteer visiting in the capacity of a friendly neighbor providing socialization and much needed contact to the outside world, combating isolation and loneliness. Often those needs are not met by traditional programs, so volunteers can step in and close this crucial gap in services.

Depending on the client's needs, volunteers in this role will just spend time with the client talking, reading or assist with getting the mail and reading it to the client or helping them understand the contents. Some clients may need a hand with simple household tasks such as switching a light bulb or vacuuming. Volunteers and clients could also partake in doing simple art projects together, if desired.

Volunteers will be paired with a client in their area and volunteer and client will agree on the specifics of the volunteer's role prior to any visits. Volunteers should be willing to commit to a minimum of one visit per month for this opportunity.

Please sign up if you are interested and we will be in touch to discuss next steps. Since this is a pilot opportunity the matching process might take a little longer. We'd love for you to provide feedback throughout the process so we can make improvements as we launch this opportunity on a bigger scale.

I'll leave you with a quote from our first volunteer in this pilot:

"The Friendly neighbor program has benefited and rewarded me in so many ways. My client was blind and lonely, little or no interaction with people on a regular basis. My stopping by just once a week to read his mail and chat lifted his spirits greatly. He now can see as he has had both cataracts removed, but I am still checking on him.

I think the only thing one needs to realize is that many live in poor circumstances but that doesn’t mean they aren’t proud of what they have. And most of all everyone needs and deserves respect and human kindness."
