Volunteer: Friendly Visitor for the Guardianship ProgramDo you enjoy spending time with older adults? Can you commit to 2 hours per month? Then this might be your calling. The public guardianship program provides conservatorship to Tennesseans who are unable to manage their own affairs and who have nobody willing and able to act on their behalf. Friendly Visitors assist the public guardianship program by visiting with an assigned client twice a month (or more often if desired by both parties). Volunteers may build a relationship of trust with the client, so that the client feels comfortable to voice any problems or concerns which otherwise may go unnoticed.
Visits with a client can look different as each client has different needs and interests. Volunteers may read to clients, provide company and observe the clients living and health conditions. Volunteers can make a real difference in the lives of seniors, providing both concrete assistance and vital contact, overcoming the isolation and depression often present in older adults. It is possible to volunteer together with a partner for this opportunity. We strive to match volunteers to clients close to their geographic location. Qualifications: Complete the required initial training and sign all required documents. Successfully pass a background screening process. Must have your own transportation to make client visits. Must be able to keep client information confidential. Must be able to complete a short report after each visit to keep conservator in the loop. Required update training: 4 hours annually. Skills necessary to be successful in this role: Have a heart for working with the Elderly, good listening skills, be respectful to the client’s mood and needs, ability to assess an individual’s circumstances based on established criteria.Agency: GNRC Guardianship for the Elderly Program Do you enjoy spending time with older adults? Volunteer: Gardening and Grounds BeautificationWith 7.5 acres of greenspace atop Mabry's Hill and a single staff member, volunteers provide vital in maintaining and beautifying our historic site. Mabry-Hazen House sits at the center of a level 1 arboretum, and green thumbs are necessary to take care of the diverse flora. There are two primary opportunities to volunteer with our grounds: Groundskeeping - Tasks like bed care, grounds maintenance, bush pruning and weeding are typical. This year we aim to expand the accessibility of natural resources because we have been included on the Dogwood Arts’s Trail. The major project of reclaiming the dogwood grove on the east end of the property will require the help of our groundskeeping volunteers, and will involve brush removal among other tasks. We also have numerous flower beds around the site and Gardening - During the Spring and Summer month, Mabry-Hazen House cultivates a kitchen garden of herbs, tomatoes, cucumbers, squashes, and other vegetables. Volunteers may help maintain and care for the garden as well as grow their own plants.Interested in sponsoring a bed? Reach out to learn how you can become a member of Mabry's Hill Garden Club!
