Volunteer: Letters to Seniors - December 2025

Help us bring some cheer to isolated seniors, seniors in nursing homes and/or disabled individuals in our communities by sending them heartfelt letters. We are looking for uplifting letters that will bring their recipients some joy!

This month we are looking for letters or cards around the theme of Winter/Holiday wishes. You can incorporate the theme through art, by making your own themed cards and within the message of your letter.

If you are interested in sending letters and/or art to seniors in the community, please sign up below and include in your response (in the notes) how many letters you would like to write. I will contact you with specific instructions for the letters and the address to send them to. Children are welcome to contribute (an adult is required for minors to sign up).

We are looking to have this round of letters completed and received by their recipients by 12/31/2025. Please allow a couple of days for mailing and distribution. If you are mailing letters for a specific holiday and would like them to arrive and be distributed before then, please mail the letters at least 1.5 weeks prior. For example, Christmas letters should be mailed at the latest by December 13th, so that staff at the facility have enough time to distribute the letters to the residents.

What do you need to provide? Volunteers will be required to have their own materials for the letters and any additional artwork you'd like to add, as well as stamps to mail the letters on hand (or you must be able to take them to the post office). I will try my best to provide you with one address for your letters so you can mail them together in a large envelope.

Need your service hours confirmed? Please track and log the actual time you spent working on the letters/cards here in the volunteer portal AND submit pictures of your letters as proof. Please note that we do NOT assign a specific number of letters per hour. Please check with your institution if they have specific requirements of how many letters you need to complete to get your hours approved.

Thank you so much for considering this opportunity!

Volunteer: Deaf Services Holiday Food Drive

This holiday season, many Deaf, Deaf-Blind, and Hard of Hearing families in our community are facing a difficult reality. Recent reductions in federal assistance programs have left gaps that make it harder than ever for these neighbors to put food on the table, especially during a time meant for warmth, togetherness, and celebration. The challenges of isolation and communication barriers often mean these families go unseen and underserved, intensifying the impact of food insecurity. That’s why we are inviting our community, sponsors, and stakeholders to come together and make a real difference by supporting our Holiday Food Drive. Your generosity can help provide complete meal boxes, grocery gift cards, or essential canned and boxed foods, ensuring that families in need have the comfort of a nourishing holiday meal. Every donation, no matter the size, goes directly to local families, sending a clear message that they are valued and cared for. By contributing, you’re not just filling plates—you’re lifting spirits, spreading hope, and helping ensure no one goes hungry this season. Please consider dropping off your donations at Partnership Deaf Services now through January, or contact us at DeafServices@PartnershipFCA.com to learn more or sign up to help. Together, we can make the holidays brighter and give the gift of hope to those who need it most. Thank you for being the difference in our community!

Volunteer: Beaumont Magnet Academy Food Bag Pick Up

Beaumont Magnet Academy provides weekly food bags for students who need food support over the weekends.  These bags contain easy to make food and snacks, as well as fresh produce ensuring that kids have food when school is not in session.  Glen Oak Missionary Baptist Church packs the nonperishable items from Second Harvest for us.  Beardsley Farm and the Rotary Club of Knoxville add the fresh produce to the bags 1-2 times a month.

To make this process work, we need help!  We need volunteers to transport our food bags from Glen Oak Missionary Baptist Church to Beaumont Magnet Academy or to Beardsley Farm on the weeks they will be adding produce.

Volunteers will pick up the food bags in the morning and drop them off at BMA or Beardsley Farm depending on the week.  We usually have approximately 100 to 130 bags.  Rolling bins are available to move items to and from your vehicle at each location.

I will reach out to you to let you know if you will be delivering to the school or to Beardsley Farm.  Dates for Beardsley Farm will be confirmed by beginning of September.  First Beardsley Farm date is 9/18.

Thank you for your support!

TCWP will sponsor a day of trail maintenance work at Whites Creek Small Wild Area in Rhea County at 10 a.m.  January 10, as part of our ongoing stewardship activities for this TVA Small Wild Area trail. Volunteer: Story Trail Care 2026

Our Reading Ranger Story Trail panels are beloved by our youngest visitors. To help them last for many more seasons volunteers wash them and report any damage from falling branches or overzealous readers. Meet at the Visitor Center to collect supplies for a leisurely afternoon on the shaded, paved half mile loop.

If you have a little more time you can check on our Little Free Library located near the bathhouse on Woodchuck Hollow. We periodically straighten the books to be sure it is in good order for our camping community. Do you know someone with carpentry skills? We'd love to add another Little Free Library near the Raccoon Creek day-use area so please have them contact us at 615-452-3706.

Volunteer: Closet Cleanout + Art with Seniors

Please join us on MLK Day to help reorganize our activities closet and make some art with our long-term residents. Our activities closet houses holiday decor, games, puzzles, chairs, tables, prayer books, and more to ensure our residents have all they need to enjoy various activities. Unfortunately, it is in need of a major cleanout to make sure it is functional for staff. A few extra pairs of hands would help us tremendously with this cleanout effort. Afterwards, volunteers can enjoy participating in an art therapy activity with our residents, seeing their impact first-hand.

Volunteer: Volunteer to Help Count People Experiencing Homelessness – Point-in-Time Outreach Survey

Help ensure every neighbor is counted.

The annual Point-in-Time (PIT) Count helps Knoxville-Knox County understand how many people are experiencing homelessness on a single night, including individuals staying outdoors or in places not meant for human habitation. Your participation ensures every person has the chance to be included in the count.

This volunteer role supports the direct outreach survey, which takes place over several days so that teams can cover as much of the county as possible. Volunteers will always be paired with an experienced outreach team lead who handles planning, supports safety, and serves as your point of contact throughout the shift.

What Volunteers Do

Walk outdoors with your team lead to known or likely locations where unsheltered neighbors may be staying.

Offer the survey, share provided incentives, and help ensure each person has the opportunity to be counted.

Follow your team lead’s guidance for safety, transportation, and approach.

Training

All volunteers must complete one online training session, available on multiple dates mid-December through mid-January. Training covers safety, survey administration, and expectations for the day.

Requirements & Conditions

Ages 18–99

Not family-friendly (due to field conditions)

Outdoors, requires walking in cold and uneven terrain

Not wheelchair accessible

Must provide phone number and emergency contact

Inclement Weather

Cold, rain, and winter conditions are common during PIT Count.

Dress in warm, weather-ready layers and sturdy boots.

Bring a small backpack with water and any personal gear you need.

You will receive confirmation at least 24 hours in advance about your shift.

If weather presents too great a challenge, discuss options with your team lead.

Outreach teams will be supplied with incentives to distribute during the count.

Why Volunteer?

Your participation helps Knoxville–Knox County understand local needs, improve services, and strengthen our community’s response to homelessness. A few hours of your time can make a meaningful difference

Volunteer: Pollinator Garden Maintenance 2026

Bledsoe Creek State Park added a pollinator garden in 2019 with the support of Friends of Bledsoe Creek State Park and a grant from the Iris Fund. With careful selection of native perennials and self seeding annuals this area has flourished. Located adjacent to the Visitor Center, it serves as a wildlife habitat, educational tool and visual interest for passersby. In every season there are tasks we can use volunteer assistance with to maintain the pollinator garden! In the spring we apply mulch and soil amendments if needed. During the summer and fall we'll be weeding and ensuring the plant markers are visible. In the winter we will put the garden to bed being careful to maintain a habitat for pollinators to overwinter. This is a family-friendly opportunity appropriate for all ages!

Volunteer: Letters to Seniors - January 2026

Help us bring some cheer to isolated seniors, seniors in nursing homes and/or disabled individuals in our communities by sending them heartfelt letters. We are looking for uplifting letters that will bring their recipients some joy!

This month we are looking for letters or cards around the theme of new beginnings/winter.

We are looking to have this round of letters completed and received by their recipients by 1/31/2025. Please allow a couple of days (we recommend at least a week) for mailing and distribution.
