Volunteer: Gardening and Grounds BeautificationWith 7.5 acres of greenspace atop Mabry's Hill and a single staff member, volunteers provide vital in maintaining and beautifying our historic site. Mabry-Hazen House sits at the center of a level 1 arboretum, and green thumbs are necessary to take care of the diverse flora. There are two primary opportunities to volunteer with our grounds: Groundskeeping - Tasks like bed care, grounds maintenance, bush pruning and weeding are typical. This year we aim to expand the accessibility of natural resources because we have been included on the Dogwood Arts’s Trail. We also have numerous flower beds around the site and Gardening - During the Spring and Summer month, Mabry-Hazen House cultivates a kitchen garden of herbs, tomatoes, cucumbers, squashes, and other vegetables. Volunteers may help maintain and care for the garden as well as grow their own plants.Interested in sponsoring a bed? Reach out to learn how you can become a member of Mabry's Hill Garden Club! Volunteer: SCHAS Out Shopping (S.O.S.) Order TakerIn the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, SCHAS has created the S.O.S Program to provide grocery delivery services to those who have compromised immune systems or are age 60 or older. Volunteers are needed to take phone orders for seniors in this program. What is involved? To be an order taker, reliable phone and access to the Internet are required as all orders are placed online on our website. Hours of operation are Monday-Friday 8am-4pm. Volunteers simply email us to let us know when they are available to take orders and again once finished for the day. We have a phone list at our reception desk to transfer calls. SOS-ers can place orders Monday-Friday between the hours of 8am-4pm by going online to our website or calling our main administrative line at 865-523-2920. Phone orders are transferred from the main office to those available to take Orders. Order takers email our reception team when they are “logged” in to take orders and then when they “log” out for the day. The orders are transferred to the Order taker so they will see SCHAS appear on their phone, so they know it’s an order call. The order taker will then go onto our website to take the order and then submit.

Volunteer: Virtual Volunteers Needed to Sponsor/Adopt Deployed SoldiersWe are looking for volunteers interested in adopting or "sponsoring" a deployed service member or soldier. This opportunity is entirely virtual and done independently. We have many deployed troops who have little to no family support, and if you choose to adopt a service member, you are agreeing to send monthly cards and letters to that service member during his or her deployment so that they will know they are appreciated and not forgotten. The care package may be of any size or value, we just want our troops to know that someone cares. We do require a background check for all interested volunteers, since we pass out sensitive military information, including names and locations. Interested volunteers may sign up to begin their background check by visiting www.friendsofthetroops.org/volunteer. Serious inquiries only, please. Volunteer: Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA)CASA is looking for volunteers able to commit to at least one year of service as Court Appointed Special Advocates. The 30 hour training and 3 hours of court observation prepare future CASAs for their role as advocates for children in abuse and neglect cases in the Knox County Juvenile Court.
CASA volunteers are everyday citizens that judges appoint to advocate for the safety and well-being of children who have been removed from their homes due to parental abuse and neglect. They stand up for these children and change their lives. CASA volunteers listen first. Then they act. Volunteers get to know the child and talk with everyone in that child’s life—parents and relatives, foster parents, teachers, medical professionals, attorneys, social workers and others. They use the information they gather to inform judges and others of what the child needs and what will be the best permanent home for them. Being a CASA volunteer does not require any special education or background, just a heart for children and a willingness to speak out and represent their best interests. You must be 21 or over, pass background checks, participate in a 33-hour pre-service training course and agree to stay with a case until it is closed (a year and a half on average). Volunteers must attend all training sessions. Agency: CASA of East Tennessee CASA is looking for volunteers able to commit to at least one year of service as Court Appointed Special Advocates.
