Volunteer: Letters to Seniors - April 2026

Help us bring some cheer to isolated seniors, seniors in nursing homes and/or disabled individuals in our communities by sending them heartfelt letters, letting them know that we care and haven't forgotten about them.

We are looking for uplifting letters that will bring their recipients some joy!

This month we are looking for Spring themed letters and cards. You can incorporate the theme through art, by making your own themed cards and within the message of your letter.

If you are interested in sending letters and/or art to seniors in the community, please sign up below and include in your response (in the notes) how many letters you would like to write. I will contact you with specific instructions for the letters and the address to send them to. Children are welcome to contribute also (an adult is required for minors to sign up).

We are looking to have this round of letters completed and received by their recipients by 04/30/2026. Please allow a couple of days for mailing and distribution.

Volunteers will be required to have their own materials for the letters and any additional artwork you'd like to add, as well as stamps to mail the letters on hand (or you must be able to take them to the post office). I will try my best to provide you with one address for your letters so you can mail them together in a large envelope.

Please allow 48 hours for me to get back to you with the instructions.

If you are in need of community service hours, I am happy to confirm your hours for you. Please submit pictures of your letters as proof. We will be tracking and logging the actual time you spent working on the letters/cards and do NOT assign a specific number of letters per hour. Please check with your institution if they have specific requirements of how many letters you need to complete to get your hours approved.

Thank you so much for considering this opportunity!

Volunteer: Weed Wrangle 2026

Join Roan Mountain State Park on Saturday, March 7th for our annual Weed Wrangle event to remove invasive plants from across the park and restore sites with native plants that thrive and benefit wildlife in those ecosystems. This year we will be meeting at the Roan Mountain State Park Visitor Center at 2:00PM EST and working until 5:00PM (3 hours) to remove non-native Chinese Privet from the edge of forests and fields near the Visitor Center and along Highway 143.  Volunteers will also work to prepare a site for restoration this year where we will plant native flowers and trees to out compete regrowth of Privet.

This year's Weed Wrangle Day is limited to 30 volunteers.  Snacks and a water cooler will be provided to participants on site, but be sure to bring a reusable water bottle, your own snacks as needed, sturdy work shoes, and any clothing to work outdoors in the elements.  All tools, gloves, and eye protection will be provided by the park, but if you have your own favorite pair of gloves and a good work shovel, feel free to bring it along.  The work day will begin and end at the Visitor Center where restrooms will be present.  Feel free to contact Park Ranger Philip Hylen with any additional questions about our event.

"Now in its 12th year, the statewide Weed Wrangle® is a volunteer effort dedicated to rescuing our public parks and green spaces from non-native invasive species. Through hands-on removal of particularly harmful trees, vines, and flowering plants, Weed Wrangle® volunteers learn, practice, and develop a habit of maintaining areas free of non-native invasive plants. They also encourage replanting with native species in removal areas. By engaging our volunteers and challenging them to take action in their own spaces, we aim to create a movement that will have the greatest impact on the invasive plant population."

Volunteer: Help Keep Pets and Families Together - Beesley Animal Foundation Outreach

For many families in our community, pet food assistance is the difference between keeping a beloved companion and facing the heartbreaking decision to surrender them. At Beesley Animal Foundation, we believe no one should have to choose between feeding themselves and feeding their pet. From August 2016 to January 2026, we’ve distributed over 52,000 pounds of cat and dog food to families in need — including 8,600+ pounds in 2025 alone.

And the need continues to grow. Your support of our Outreach Program helps keep pets healthy, reduces shelter surrenders, and ensures families can stay together during tough times.

The need is constant, and our shelves empty quickly. Supporting our wish list directly helps us keep pets healthy and families together.

Volunteer: Bassmaster Classic - Attendance Counting

The 2026 Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Classic presented by Under Armour is headed back to the Tennessee River March 12-15! The prestigious championship bass tournament — widely known as the “Super Bowl of Bass Fishing” — will be held in downtown Knoxville.

Volunteers are needed to record attendance. Did you know? Knoxville currently holds the record for the 1st and 3rd most-attended Bassmaster Classic tournaments. Let's find out if we'll beat our own record in 2026! Volunteers must have a keen eye and attention to detail in order to accurately account for all attendees. Volunteers will receive a counter clicker. These numbers will be used for the Official attendance record, so accuracy is pertinent.

Shifts will take place at either the Knoxville Convention Center or the World's Fair Exhibition Hall (these venues are across the street from each other). More information about parking will be provided.

Check back soon, as more shifts on Friday will be added.

Tennessee State Parks is again partnering with the Garden Club of America with a nationwide single-day volunteer event on March 1. Join Park Rangers on the Springfield Trail at North Chick State Park to remove encroaching English Ivy. English Ivy is an invasive species which is known to outcompete native ground plants for space and nutrients and inhibit the canopy growth of trees. We will work to remove the ivy by cutting it back with hand tools. We will be working for about 2 hours. Please come prepared for this event by wearing weather-appropriate shoes and clothing. Expect to get dirty and/or wet; older clothing may be better suited for this manual labor activity. You may bring your own hand tools, or tools will be provided. Gloves will also be provided. Bring a reusable water bottle and snacks. Water will also be provided by Rangers. There are no restroom facilities on the trail. The closest restroom is located at the Circle K gas station. Parking will be at Ivy Academy, and the Park Rangers will meet you at this location. From the Ivy Academy Parking lot, travel to the Springfield Trail on foot to the work location. The trail to the marked location for removal is a combination of dirt and rock; it will take approximately 10 minutes to walk to this location from the parking lot. Those participating in this activity should be able to use hand tools to remove plants with stems or stumps less than 5 inches in diameter. In addition to English Ivy, this area is also known to host poison ivy. Work gloves and long sleeves are encouraged.

Volunteer: Weed Wrangle March 2026 at Sellars Farm Archaeological Site

Weed Wrangle® is a one-day, area-wide, volunteer effort to help rescue our public parks and green spaces from non-native invasive species through hands-on removal of especially harmful trees, vines, and flowering plants. Supervised by an expert in invasive weed management, Weed Wrangle® volunteers learn, practice and begin a habit of maintaining an area free of non-native invasive plants and encourage replanting with natives in removal areas. By engaging our neighbors and challenging them to take action in their own spaces, we hope to create a movement that will have the greatest impact on the invasive plant population.

Join us as we get rid of the pests. We will be using loppers to cut and remove unwanted invasives in the park like Chinese privet, bush honeysuckle, Bradford pears, and many more.

Projects will vary depending on need and number of volunteers.

We will cancel for inclement weather. However, we will work in light rain/snow and temperatures above freezing.

Please dress appropriately and bring water! We have gloves but you can also bring your own. Children are welcomed but must be supervised by adults the entire time.
