Each year, the Roane County United Way seeks community volunteers who would be willing to serve on our Community Investment Grant Panel. This is a 4-6 week commitment (with much of the tasks being completed at your convenience) and, consists of reading grant applications, attending evening-time interviews with agencies seeking funding (typically 2-3 evenings), scoring the applications based on information received through the applications and interviews, and making funding recommendations. This is a collective panel, with each panel member sharing their opinions and working together to determine funding allocations based on United Way priorities, community needs, and relevance to the mission of the United Way. Training is provided. Grant panel volunteers must not be employed by agencies applying for funding through United Way grants.

The Joy of Music School holds Board Meetings from noon to 1pm on the third Wednesday of every other month throughout the calendar year. Our first meeting of 2026 will be on Wednesday, January 21st. We are looking for a volunteer receptionist to answer phones and let visitors in to the school during those six meetings. It is a light duty position.

YWCA hosts a mobile Prom Dress Sale where we take dresses to local high schools to help students choose a dress they can afford ($25). Please help us load/unload as needed. This will happen on Feb 2, 18, 25, Mar 3, 16, and 25.

Scott's Gulf Wilderness staff needs your help!

This could include: removing trees, roots, or rocks from the trail, and/or general trail improvement. This is a strenuous, labor intensive trail day so please plan accordingly. Bring plenty of water, lunch, snacks, and hiking sticks. Wear weather appropriate clothing and sturdy hiking boots.

We honor all TN promise hours.  If you need to complete community service or volunteer service hours to fulfill a requirement for scholarships, graduation, fraternity/sorority obligations, etc., this is a great opportunity to get those hours. Volunteers should plan on meeting park staff at the Virgin Falls Trailhead (2080 Scotts Gulf Road, Sparta, TN) at 10:00am. Ranger Allen or a park staff maintenance lead will brief all volunteers on the location in the park where the work will take place and the project/task to be done.

ReLAUNCH is in need of volunteers 18 years of age and older to help us serve the homeless at the  Under the Bridge (the Day Space*). You can check in at the KARM Courtyard is located at 408 N. Broadway, and the Day Space is located under the I-40 overpass.

On an ongoing daily basis, these are some of the tasks we need help with during the day:

ReLAUNCH is currently operating the KARM Courtyard concession building, so please check in with us there. The courtyard gates open at 8am, but a staff member will be there earlier to let you in.

The address is 408 N Broadway, Knoxville, TN 37917. Parking is limited. You cannot park in the KARM parking lot with getting a permit from the front desk at KARM. 

*The Day Space is considered a "Safe Use" area. During your volunteer shift, you may see active drug use.

**Duties may vary based on need and availability. Some of this service will include trash pickup in the Day Space, sorting donations, etc., if another agency is serving meals in place of ReLAUNCH.

Beaumont Magnet Academy provides weekly food bags for students who need food support over the weekends.  These bags contain easy to make food and snacks, as well as fresh produce ensuring that kids have food when school is not in session.  Glen Oak Missionary Baptist Church packs the nonperishable items from Second Harvest for us.  Beardsley Farm and the Rotary Club of Knoxville add the fresh produce to the bags 1-2 times a month.

To make this process work, we need help!  We need volunteers to transport our food bags from Glen Oak Missionary Baptist Church to Beaumont Magnet Academy or to Beardsley Farm on the weeks they will be adding produce.

Volunteers will pick up the food bags in the morning and drop them off at BMA or Beardsley Farm depending on the week.  We usually have approximately 100 to 130 bags.  Rolling bins are available to move items to and from your vehicle at each location.  

I will reach out to you to let you know if you will be delivering to the school or to Beardsley Farm.  Dates for Beardsley Farm will be confirmed by beginning of September.  First Beardsley Farm date is 9/18.

Volunteers are needed to assist with NCC's Annual Spring Jam event, which takes place March 12-14th.  

Here is a synopsis of Spring Jam...  

NCC's “Spring Jam” Spring Break experience is an annual educational event that provides a unique, artistic, and cultural experience to lower-income families and youth in Memphis, Tennessee.  This event highlights a particular country to give youth who may never experience visiting another country the opportunity to gain that experience in a mock simulation event. More than 1200 youth are expected to have this experience over the 3-day event. This year marks our 21st year hosting this event, and we will be highlighting the country of America.

This volunteer project involves welcoming and assisting youth as they navigate through America, while visiting and learning about the cities of Washington DC, New York City, and Los Angeles.

Beginning on July 1st, 2025 - individuals who are interested in volunteering with Muse Knoxville must complete a 60 minute on-site orientation with the Vice President of Operations. CAMP ASSISTANT VOLUNTEER DESCRIPTION 

Camp Assistant volunteers at Muse Knoxville work alongside our Education staff to help facilitate a fun, safe, and educational experience for Camp Muse kids. This volunteer is managed by the Vice President of Operations, the Education Manager, and the Director of Education and Exhibits. Any questions or concerns regarding scheduled shifts, hours verification, etc. will be directed to Shelby Cornell at shelby@themuseknoxville.org.  

REQUIREMENTS: After you register for a Camp Muse shift, you will receive an email from Trusted Employees within 72 business hours. You must complete the background check, at no cost to you, prior to one week before your scheduled shift or else you cannot volunteer.

SCHEDULE: This volunteer opportunity occurs before and during Muse’s operating hours. Volunteer shifts are 6-7 hours in length, depending on the specific camp. Shifts are scheduled via Give Pulse, Volunteer East Tennessee, or other volunteer recruitment platform.

WHEN VOLUNTEERING AS A CAMP ASSISTANT, YOU WILL … 

Monitor Camp Muse kids on the exhibit floor and outdoor playground, watching as they play for unsafe behavior and to ensure that they are following expectations

Correct Camp Muse kids accordingly if they are not following directions or expectations

Engage with Camp Muse kids and Education staff during the classroom lessons and activities, helping kids as needed with the activity, passing out materials, prepping activity stations, helping to clean up, and monitoring the behavior of the Camp Muse kids

Assist with lunch time by helping to open any containers, monitoring Camp Muse kids for safe behavior while eating, and assisting with clean up after they are done eating

Assist with bathroom monitoring by escorting Camp Muse kids to the bathroom from the outside play areas, the exhibit floor, or the classroom; waiting outside the doors for the Camp Muse kids and walking them back to the rest of the group

Help pick up toys and reset exhibit spaces after Camp Muse kids are on the exhibit floor

Assist with dismissal by helping to monitor Camp Muse kids as they are waiting to be picked up by their adults

Clean counters, wipe tables, and sweep the classroom floor after the Camp Muse kids dismiss

Volunteers needed to greet folks coming for food (groceries) assistance, assist with setting up food displays, and helping our guests select food items. Any amount of time between 9am-1pm is good This pantry provides food to about 250 families each day.

Mobile Pantry Distribution Support:  Anderson County / Rocky Top

This is a wonderful opportunity for volunteers to serve close to home- in their own community. Our truck and staff will arrive with food and volunteers will work together to assist in the distribution of the food items to those in need. Volunteers must be able to stand for the duration of shift, as well as lift, bend and carry boxes to vehicles.

This food distribution is outdoors, please plan to dress according to the weather.

This is the heart of what we do. On Distribution Day, volunteers help prepare food boxes and load them into the cars of those we are serving. From organizing items to loading boxes and offering a kind word, every role makes a difference.

Whether you’re working behind the scenes or face-to-face with our community, you’re helping create a welcoming space where every person feels supported and cared for.

Volunteers are needed to assist in preparing sack lunches for those in our community fighting food insecurity.

Tasks can include food prep and cleanup.

Dress code:  Must wear pants and closed toe shoes, as well as be modestly dressed (no short shirts) If you do not dress appropriately, you will be asked to leave and come back with proper attire.

Our volunteers work out of our Maryville warehouse in the Product Recovery area or our Repack Clean Room where we process donated and bulk food for distribution, to help feed our East Tennessee neighbors.

Volunteers also help in non-food project support roles such as cleaning, letter stuffing, and miscellaneous admin duties. 

No experience necessary! Training will be provided on-site at the beginning of the shift.

*Volunteers must be at least 10 years of age, and anyone under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult chaperone.

MEDIC Regional Blood Center is currently seeking volunteers to assist in scheduling appointments with whole blood donors. Volunteers will use MEDIC office phones and will be asked to make several calls per shift. 

All volunteers must undergo a criminal background check, no exceptions. MEDIC staff will send the background check link to your email address within 48 hours of your registration to volunteer. 

Volunteers will also need to sign waivers during their first shift. Volunteers will be given a volunteer ID badge to wear while they work at the center. 

Schedulers will work at our Ailor Center at 1601 Ailor Avenue. Volunteers must adhere to MEDIC policies, including those for smoke-free and fragrance-free environments. 

Volunteers will be given a script and a call list using our donor platform. 

Volunteers who do not show up for their registered volunteer slot without notice forfeit all remaining slots the volunteer has signed up for. We need paper/styrofoam plates, paper/styrofoam cups, plastic spoons or plastic sporks, coffee, powdered creamer, sugar, toilet paper, paper towels, cold weather clothes (coats, parkas, hats, gloves, socks), disposable nitrile gloves, cleaning supplies and disinfectant wipes.

Our school food pantry provides essential support to families by offering fresh produce, shelf‑stable groceries, and household necessities each week. This work ensures that every child in our community has access to the nourishment they need to learn, grow, and thrive. To keep our pantry running smoothly, we rely on volunteers to help unload and organize deliveries. These deliveries often include boxes of canned goods, cases of produce, and bulk items that require moderate to heavy lifting. Be aware of your surroundings and let a staff member know if you see something unsafe, witness an injury, or see a lost child or a parent looking for a lost child

Communicate any items needed on exhibit floor to a staff member (Makespace supplies, Draw Alive copies, etc.)

Answer questions from guests as applicable and/or direct them to the nearest staff member

Facilitate Daily Discovery activity table as directed by staff

Complete other tasks as assigned by staff including but not limited to cutting Draw Alive copies, sharpening pencils for Draw Alive and Makespace, replacing zip ties on Zip Tie Car Wash, cutting out and laminating items for homeschool and camp programming, sanding and painting blocks for Norilla exhibit, and organizing staff kitchen

Complete outdoor tasks as assigned by staff based on availability and need including but not limited to pulling weeds, spreading mulch, leaf blowing, painting, etc. 

In Makespace exhibit area:

Monitor children and ensure the safe use of the hot glue guns

Facilitate creativity and discovery by asking questions, encouraging children, and helping them find supplies

Restock supplies if bins are low or empty

Clean off tables and surfaces

Sweep the floor often and before the end of your shift

The Salvation Army is seeking individuals to help serve dinner for residents in our shelters. 

Volunteers serve food from a cafeteria-style serving line and assist with other kitchen duties, as needed.  Kitchen duties can include sweeping, cleaning and disinfecting tables and/or rinsing dishes.  

Once you sign up for a shift, your volunteer shift is confirmed.

If you are volunteering as part of a group, each person in the group must sign up to volunteer separately.

Arrival time, parking, entry, and attire:

Please arrive at our Knoxville Area Command at 409 N Broadway, Knoxville, TN no later than 11:45 pm. You may park anywhere. Enter the main building facing Broadway building through our main entrance (second entrance on the front side of the building between the flag pole and playground). Let the receptionist know you are there to volunteer. You will be directed where to go once you check in at the front desk. 

If you are volunteering on a date when the main office is closed, please walk around the back of the main building to the kitchen entrance which is the last door on the raised patio.

Volunteers should wear long pants and closed-toed shoes. Attire should also be appropriate and not include profanity, low-cut tops, or excessively short dresses or shorts.

The park's native flower beds are looking great!  To stay looking good, we need your help.  We are looking for volunteers to help maintain our beautiful gardens.  Work will include cutting back last year's growth, trimming plants, blowing fall leaves out, pulling the ever present dreaded weeds and general TLC.

This is a great opportunity to earn volunteer hours for TN Naturalist certification, scholarships, school, or scouting badges!  Please wear appropriate clothing and closed toe shoes; if you have work gloves and hand pruners feel free to bring them, all other tools will be provided.

Join our LIFNAV outreach team during meal services on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays as they provide meals to those living in encampments. You can provide needed assistance while getting an up-close view on the impact the program is having in our community!

Join Leadership Memphis for an insightful and timely Multicultural Breakfast as we explore the intersection of cutting-edge technology and community well-being. The meet up location is at the maintenance yard off of Warner Rd.

The 2026 Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Classic presented by Under Armour is headed back to the Tennessee River March 12-15! The prestigious championship bass tournament — widely known as the “Super Bowl of Bass Fishing” — will be held in downtown Knoxville.

Volunteers are needed to record attendance. Did you know? Knoxville currently holds the record for the 1st and 3rd most-attended Bassmaster Classic tournaments. Let's find out if we'll beat our own record in 2026! Volunteers must have a keen eye and attention to detail in order to accurately account for all attendees. Volunteers will receive a counter clicker. These numbers will be used for the Official attendance record, so accuracy is pertinent. 

Shifts will take place at either the Knoxville Convention Center or the World's Fair Exhibition Hall (these venues are across the street from each other). More information about parking will be provided.

Senior Ride Nashville is growing our volunteer driver team! Drivers use their own vehicles to transport seniors to community centers, medical appointments, grocery stores, beauty/barber shops and more. It is Senior Ride Nashville’s mission to enrich the lives of older adults and engage them in the community by providing affordable and assisted transportation.

Interested in learning to work with birds of prey?  Join Roan Mountain State Park for a series of volunteer workdays with Park Ranger Phil Hylen and our park owls: Shiloh and Sunshine.  Volunteers will help the park to clean owl cages, complete minor aviary maintenance, and assist with the care of the owls (obtaining weights, checking housing conditions, and learning their stories to educate the public).  Each shift will begin by meeting Ranger Phil at the Park Headquarters building to sign in and brief for the shift.  While 3 volunteers will help to clean, a handler will be present to work with the owls directly and train cleaners on skillsets necessary to work directly with the owls.      

Shifts vary on time and the maximum number of volunteers.  We will be trying to conduct two volunteer days per week to allow for more enrichment time with the owls and volunteers.  

Join us in supporting students and families by helping stock, organize, and distribute essential pantry items. As a Food Pantry Volunteer, you’ll play a vital role in creating a welcoming, dignified space where every child’s basic needs are met with care and respect. Gatlinburg Smoky Mountain Wine Fest is back and better than ever this year, we could not be more excited! This event will take place on March 14th at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts (556 Parkway, Gatlinburg, TN 37738). This event is full of wine tastings, shopping the beautiful work of local artists, and listening to live music. The East Tennessee Kidney Foundation is looking for volunteers to help at their annual Knox Shamrock Fest + Lucky Kidney Run!

Knox Shamrock Fest is the region's premier family-friendly St. Patrick's Day festival! This fundraiser isn't just a fun time, it brings awareness to individuals suffering from kidney disease, while benefitting patients facing hurdles this disease brings. Volunteers will be needed throughout the festival area.

The Lucky Kidney Run, a part of Knox Shamrock Fest, gives participants the option to run a 6k or walk 1 mile through South Knoxville. Volunteers will be placed throughout the course, including the water station and finish line.

Lakeshore Park Conservancy is always in need of volunteers to help with daily maintenance and care for the Park. Join us for Weeding Wednesday to help our grounds crew with various projects within the Park. This is a wonderful opportunity for volunteers to serve close to home- in their own community. Our truck and staff will arrive with food and volunteers will work together to assist in the distribution of the food items to those in need. Volunteers must be able to stand for the duration of shift, as well as lift, bend and carry boxes to vehicles.

This food distribution is outdoors, please plan to dress according to the weather.

In preparation for the upcoming garrison, we will be getting the fort ready for a busy weekend.  Work will include sweeping fort buildings, cleaning tables, light dusting, stacking firewood and other odds and ends.  Please bring work gloves; all other tools and equipment will be provided.  Meet at the visitor center; we will work from 1:00 PM to 4:00 P.M.

This event offers a deep dive into Memphis’s rich musical heritage, bringing together local artists and engineers to share the stories, craft, and history behind some of our city’s most beloved songs. We’re inviting volunteers to help bring this powerful storytelling experience to life. Volunteers will support event flow, assist artists and speakers, welcome guests, and help create an engaging, respectful space where Memphis music history can be shared and celebrated. If you’re passionate about music, storytelling, and preserving our city’s cultural legacy, this is a meaningful opportunity to serve, learn, and be part of an unforgettable community experience.

Join Ranger Josh at the Big Ridge Park Office to help distribute trees for the annual Tennessee Tree Day from 9am to 12pm March 20th through the 21st.

In addition to distributing trees for Tennessee Tree Day we will also be cleaning out the Visitor Center’s Garden and spreading out some fresh mulch.

All help would be greatly appreciated!

Each month we host a volunteer Saturday for volunteers to engage in helping families and communities recover from Hurricane Helene. The project can range from trash pickup, home rebuilds, building sheds, painting, laying floor or general activities related to Helene recovery.

This is a great service event for groups, teens or workplaces to get involved with team building and helping others.

Reset Memphis Day is more than just an event – it’s a movement. The initiative aims to erase dividing lines of classicism and unite Memphians from all walks of life. Through shared experiences, the community will engage in fellowship, healing through the arts, and resource-sharing to promote mental health, violence prevention, and citywide unity. The event will serve as a beacon of hope, offering relief from the daily stresses and challenges that too often divide us. We have targeted 3000 people that will enjoy LIVE musical acts from the sound stage, 55 vendors, family games, food trucks, video game trucks, mechanical bull riding, bounce houses, skating, and many more HUGE surprises.

Reelfoot Lake State Park is participating in Tennessee Tree Day, and we are looking for volunteers to help us prepare native tree saplings for distribution and help coordinate tree sapling pickups!

Volunteers will arrive 30 minutes before the event starts to help prepare at 8:30 AM. Park will be providing all materials; we just need you! 

Knoxville Children's Theatre (KCT) has curated our first-ever fundraising gala to be held on March 21, 2026. It will be an inspiring evening that brings creativity and passion of KCT to life through live performances from talented young actors, rare behind-the-scenes looks at how our youth design, build, and manage every production under expert mentorship.

Douglas Lake is a popular place for recreational activities. Unfortunately, heavy use can lead to negative impacts. Join us as we spruce up Dike (Saddle Dam) 10 at the end of Allensville Rd by removing litter and graffiti!

Fort Sanders Educational Development teachers want to take their preschoolers outside! With hands-on learning the core of the project, support is needed to prepare the space before the teachers will plant the space out with their students. Tasks may include: removing sod, mulching, moving raised beds, etc.

Please bring a water bottle and wear closed-toe shoes and clothes you don't mind getting dirty!

Family Fun Day is a free event open to the public, welcoming all ages and abilities. Attendees can enjoy arts activities, family entertainment, food, music, and a chance to explore our galleries. It’s a fantastic opportunity for students to engage with the community, earn volunteer hours, and experience the joy of helping others.

This vibrant event is dedicated to fostering creativity, embracing innovation in artmaking, exploring the sciences, and celebrating our new visiting exhibition, A Two-Way Mirror (February 6, 2026 - May 3, 2026), alongside works from the KMA Collection.

The Children's Museum of Memphis would love for you to volunteer with us during the spring. This would be a weekend shift, and the focus would be on gallery support and programs. Some of the programs would include coding, sensory play, story time, and some pop-up activities. 

If you are under the age of 18, we require that you fill out a guardian permission form first.  Anyone who is above 17 will need to go through a background check. This can take weeks for us to get. No one is able to start volunteering until we have the documents. Please email Paige.whipp@cmom.com for the documents.

If anyone shows up without the required information, you will not be able to volunteer with us and will get sent home. 

Since we work with kids, we ask that everyone dress appropriately. This means no holes in you pants, and no foul images or language anywhere on your clothes. We prefer for people to wear closed-toe shoes and a black t-shirt.

We’re so happy to support the 36th annual Ijams River Rescue organized by Ijams Nature Center with a cleanup on Melton Hill Lake of the Clinch River, a tributary of the Tennessee River. This cleanup will also be held in partnership with the Melton Hill Lake Users Association supporting this cleanup!
