Volunteer: Packing Snack Backpacks for Food Insecure School Children

How can a child focus on solving a math problem or memorizing a new word in school when they are trying to ignore the persistent pangs of hunger?

Teachers and counselors have found that in some instances, when Monday morning comes, they are forced to compete against hunger for the attention of their students. Unfortunately, many school children in our community go home to little or no food on the weekends. The RIFA Snack Backpack ministry works to fill this gap by providing kid-friendly, easy-to-prepare, nutritious food items for children who are at risk of going hungry on Saturdays and Sundays.

This ministry began in 2005 by serving 25 children at one elementary school. Today, RIFA provides Snack Backpacks to approximately 1,000 children at 14 elementary schools each week during the school year (37 weeks). Each Snack Backpack provides a child with six meals and two snacks and costs approximately $4.76. The yearly cost per child in the Snack Backpack program is $176.

Volunteer: Pollinator Garden Maintenance 2025

Bledsoe Creek State Park added a pollinator garden in 2019 with the support of Friends of Bledsoe Creek State Park and a grant from the Iris Fund. With careful selection of native perennials and self seeding annuals this area has flourished. Located adjacent to the Visitor Center, it serves as a wildlife habitat, educational tool and visual interest for passersby. In every season there are tasks we can use volunteer assistance with to maintain the pollinator garden! In the spring we apply mulch and soil amendments if needed. During the summer and fall we'll be weeding and ensuring the plant markers are visible. In the winter we will put the garden to bed being careful to maintain a habitat for pollinators to overwinter. This is a family-friendly opportunity appropriate for all ages!

Volunteer: Day Of Caring 2025- Lula Lake Land Trust- Moonshine Trail System Project

Who We Are- Founded in 1994, Lula Lake Land Trust is a mission-driven nonprofit dedicated to conservation, successfully safeguarding more than 12,000 acres on Lookout Mountain, Georgia. Our properties include ecosystems classified as “high conservation value,” providing critical habitat for a diverse range of plant and wildlife species that depend on our stewardship efforts to thrive. Our goal is to protect wildlife and natural spaces/resources along the Lookout Mountain Plateau and Rock Creek Watershed and educate visitors as to why conservation is so important in the first place, while providing a safe place and space for them to recreate responsibly. Our dedicated Stewardship team, though small with just two staff members, manages approximately 4,000 acres of land owned by our organization. With a small staff, we naturally depend on volunteers to help us achieve our mission of conservation, education, and low-impact recreation.

Stewardship Project- Under the leadership of Mason Price, our Land Manager of four years, we will undertake restoration projects on Lula Lake’s Moonshine Trail system. We’ll hike about a half mile in to our project work site, carrying our tools and supplies for the day. Volunteers will use hand tools and saws to clear vegetation through the corridor of the new trail. Then, work will begin to dig into the tread to create a sustainable trail surface.

Meeting Location/Parking- We will meet Mason at Lula Lake's Core Preserve property, located at: 5000 Lula Lake Rd. Lookout Mountain, GA 30750. After you drive through the gate, you will see a large parking area on your left. Park there, and Mason will give us an orientation and fill you in on what we'll be doing for the day. We will then hike across the street to the Moonshine trail system where we will begin working on the stewardship project.

What to bring: Please bring a reusable water bottle, snacks, clothing suitable for the weather, and a rain jacket if there is rain in the forecast. We recommend wearing long pants to help protect against ticks and poison ivy. Sturdy, closed-toe shoes or boots suitable for hiking are required. Please do not wear sandals or flip-flops. Bug spray and sunscreen are recommended. We will provide the tools and work-gloves for the day.

Site Supervisor- Our Land Manager, Mason Price, will be the Site Supervisor and point of contact. For any questions leading up to the volunteer project, he can reached at: mason@lulalake.org.

Allergies- In the warmer months, we do see yellow jackets nested in the ground. If you or anyone in your group is allergic to stings or anything else in nature, please bring your own EpiPen or Benadryl, as we do not carry them on site.

Volunteer: Day of Caring 2025- Crabtree Farms- Fall Plant Sale & New Hi-tunnel Prep

Crabtree Farms needs your help in gearing up for our annual Fall Plant Sale, maintaining fence lines, as well as prepping the space for a new hi-tunnel green house! We appreciate your willingness to tackle some event prep tasks involved with this project including: weeding, picking up and organizing farm tools/objects, cleaning our event center and barn, farm beautification, and general farm-related support tasks. We will make this day fun as we experience the beauty and tranquility of our farm. Some heavy lifting and power tool use may be involved for a few volunteers who are willing. We will supply any tools/equipment that may be needed for the project. We supply sunscreen and insect repellent, but if you prefer your own you are welcome to bring it.

What to Bring to your volunteer shift at Crabtree Farms
*Comfortable long sleeves and long pants/skirts that can get dirty!
*Close-toed shoes.
*Protective headgear and SPF on sunny days.
*If rain is in the forecast, please wear a poncho or raincoat - we farm rain or shine!
*Water bottle (we have delicious well water onsite).
*Positive energy and a willingness to learn :)
*Additionally, if you have a pair of garden gloves you like to use, bring those! We have some gloves here, but it's a little tricky to find a matching set.

*It's best to bring a snack (fruit, granola, etc.) for yourself if you know you may need it - we've noticed folks get a little hungry about halfway through their shift.

Weather: Please check the weather forecast and dress accordingly. In case of inclement weather, we will notify you of any changes. We farm rain or shine, so be sure to bring a change of clothes if rain is in the forecast, especially fresh socks!

Parking: Please arrive a few minutes early to find parking in either our main parking area near the entrance or down by the pole barn (follow bus loading sign) and walk to the barn, where we will be congregating before heading out to the field.

Waivers: We do require all volunteers to complete a waiver prior to beginning a shift. Please complete this ahead of time and email to cwatts@crabtreefarms.org, or you may fill one out when you arrive.

We look forward to working with you on this Day of Caring project!
